It is said to have its origin in the 16th century in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The immigrant community of Sourashtras is believed to have started making Rasam in their kitchens. Rasam is also called 'Polichaar,' 'Saaru,' or 'Chaar.' It is an excellent drink for digestion and the lightest meal one can have with hot rice. Rasam is cherished by every individual at any time. It can also be enjoyed by dipping bondas or vadas in it.
